Belonging and Community Free Essays

What is my current understanding of belonging and community? Well id have to say belonging is a big thing to teens and most people believe you have to dress a certain way or do something to fit into there apparent â€Å"community† but I definitely dont care what others think. Community to me is my friends family and people who mean alot to me. However that isnt the correct meaning, community is a bunch of people living in a certain area. We will write a custom essay sample on Belonging and Community or any similar topic only for you Order Now I like to think my idea of a community is how it should be. How did I come to this understanding of my thinking? Well I dont fully know, its mainly values and thoughts that ive collected and made in my mind while growing older. Many things probably come from my dad hes a great man with alot of good values and he helped shaped who I am today. My mother also taught me alot of good values and also helped shaped who I am. I definitely can’t give all the credit to them I have to give some of it to my friends to they have great ways of thinking and are very great people. Thats not all though alot of these ways of thinking come from me and thoughts I think in my head of how the world should be. What are views of others regarding belonging and community? Many of my peers think belonging means trying to be like someone else and fitting into something they like to think is a community. Why is community important in our society? Well without community what do we actually have? A whole lotta nothing really, without community how would we have friends like we have today? Id say without community were very isolated and us ourselves wouldnt be the people we are today. Do you feel we need to have communites? No, We dont absolutely need communities we can just be zombies wandering in no general life direction. Seriously I think we need communitys cause our friends, family and such they are there when you need them. What happens if you have non of that and are in a bad situation? Well you arent able to stay emotionally stable and lose any sort of ambition or heart you have. You crash and fall and have no one to pick you back up again least thats how I feel. If we didnt belong to a community what would we be missing out on? Id have to say we would be missing out on many different things. We would be missing out on our chances to socialize and not be so isolated. We would be missing out on learning certain morals and life choices. We would miss out on having many different friends who help us go through all the crap teenagers have to go through. I also think without communities alot of people wouldnt have much ambition to try hard I know I wouldnt at least. What kinds of communities do I belong to? I belong to quite a few communities if you go by the definition of others. Communities such as school, area district, working community. Thats not community to me though community to me would be my friends and family. I gotta say my group of friends is one of the most important types of community to me cause we have eachothers backs through thick and thin. Even more important family cause seriously without family where would you be right now? Not here thats for sure. How to cite Belonging and Community, Essay examples

Wealth Corrupts - an Analysis of the Great Gatsby free essay sample

As Henry Fielding once said, Money is the fruit of evil, as often as the root of it. (Henry Fielding). This is entirely true in the novel The Great Gatsby, where money is the leading factor in all that happens during the course of the story. The novel, The Great Gatsby, a very profound work of literature, extends on many levels and through various themes in order to provide readers with the central idea that wealth corrupts. Daisy Buchanan is the first character in the novel that has evidently been corrupted by wealth. Daisy, born and raised into an enormously wealthy family, never had to work for anything in life; anything she wanted was immediately given to her. Later in life she married Tom Buchanan also extravagantly wealthy who gave her a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars (76). This life of wealth inevitably led to a life of boredom for Daisy. We will write a custom essay sample on Wealth Corrupts an Analysis of the Great Gatsby or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Her life was so boring, in fact, that she audibly wonders Whatll [she] do with [herself] this afternoon†¦ and the day after that, and [for] the next thirty years (118). The feelings and the lives of others hold no influence over Daisy. Even her own daughter, Pammy, holds no meaning for her. She views her daughter as a mere toy, an object to show off to help boost her own image. When she hit and killed Myrtle Wilson, and when Gatsby died, she did show any emotion towards either of their deaths. Daisy, best illustrated as a careless person, smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into [her] money [and her] vast carelessness and let other people clean up the mess [she] had made (145). Daisy only cared about protecting herself, as people in her position are wont to do. Tom Buchanan, Daisys husband, has also been corrupted by the wealth maintained in his family. He is never content with what he has, and as a result of this he has numerous affairs; of course he gives no thought as to how Daisy might feel about this. During the timeline of the novel, he has an affair with Myrtle Wilson, but he does not actually care about her either. This is evident when Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand (37). When Gatsby declares his love for Daisy, Tom breaks out into pure hypocrisy; bashing Gatsby for having an affair with his wife, tating that [He supposed] that the latest thing was to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to [his] wife (130). He then emphasizes that Gatsby is a nobody by revealing that Gatsby was a bootlegger and an inheritor of new money. He also stated that he loved Daisy and although Once in a while [he] may go off on a spree and make a fool of [himself], [he] always [comes] back, and in [his] heart [he loves] her all the time (131). All throughout the novel it is shown that Tom has the same problem with empathy that Daisy does, the problem of careless people. Toms total apathy towards other people is a perfect reflection of the careless lifestyle that he leads. Even all of the major secondary characters have fallen under the influence of money. The famous golfer, Jordan Baker accused of moving her golf ball to a better position in the semi-finals of a golf tournament wasnt able to endure being at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness, [Nick supposed] she had begun dealing in subterfuges†¦ in order to keep that cool, insolent smile turned to the world (58). She lies to protect her image knowing that if she gets caught she can use her money to protect herself. Gatsbys friend and fellow bootlegger, Meyer Wolfsheim, [played] with the faith of fifty million people (73), fixing the 1918 World Series just to earn some quick cash. All of this goes to show that, although people may think that they have instinctive values and virtues, money can easily corrupt anyone. The miserable characters in The Great Gatsby were all victim to the tantalizing grasp that money and the power and carelessness that comes along with it—had on them.

Adhd Essays - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,

Adhd Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders among children. About 3 percent to 5 percent of American children are affected by this disorder. This disorder is commonly mis-diagnosed in children who are very hyperactive, assuming that very hyperactive kids have this disorder. In this paper I plan to discuss ideas such as: the symptoms, theories of causation, risks, and how this disorder is looked at and treated. There are signs that a child may be affected by ADHD, which are very noticeable in some cases. Some of the physical symptoms that are involved include hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsitivity. When discussing inattention, the idea that individuals have difficulty sustaining interest in finishing a task, strangely, a person with ADHD may have no problems with attention while doing an activity they enjoy, but won't be able to finish a complicated or new task. People with this disorder are often noted for their inconsistencies, have bad handwriting, miss details, and are often forgetful. But because the individual over-focuses on something of great interest, or something that is highly stimulating, many times an untrained observer may assume that this ability to concentrate negates the possibility of ADHD being a concern, especially when they see children able to pay attention while working one-on-one with someone, doing something they enjoy, or can sit and play a video game or watch television for hours on end. In addition to problems with attention, people with ADHD can be fidgety, and appear to be moving around constantly. Which leads me to myth that all people with ADHD a re hyperactive, this is not always the case. Because society has traditionally thought of a person with ADHD as being ?hyper', many children who have this disorder with no signs of being hyperactive are not being identified or treated. For those individuals who are not hyperactive, they are often thought of as a ?day-dreamers' or an ?absent-minded professors'. The non-hyperactive children with ADHD most often seem to be girls, but it is 5 to 7 more common in boys. (Booth, 2000) Another symptom that is very common in people with ADHD is impulsitivity, which means that the individual seems to be unable to think before they act. They may interrupt others who are talking, blurt out inappropriate comments, or have a hard time waiting their turn. Regardless of the consequence, people with ADHD can out as if they are out of control. Although researchers are still studying exactly what causes ADHD, they know what doesn't cause it, and that is sugar. Sugar and food additives don't cause ADHD, and in research study in 1982 the National Institutes of Health concluded that restricting sugar and food additive consumption only helped about 5% of the children with this disorder. Minor brain injuries from early infection, or birth complications also have been ruled out, head injuries can only explain a few cases of ADHD, not all of them. Television watching, poor home and school environments also don't cause ADHD, they may contribute to behavior that resembles the symptoms. Instead new theories point to low levels of activity in some parts of the brain as an indicator of ADHD. In one study, investigators found that control attention, meaning that areas were less active and caused inattention. Cocaine and heavy alcohol use during pregnancy may also distort developing nerve cell. Using alcohol during pregnancy may cause fe tal alcohol syndrome, which leads to low birth weight, and certain physical and intellectual impairments. Many FAS children also show the same symptoms as children with ADHD. I feel that you can rule out genes, because they probably account for some ADHD causes. Children with this disorder usually have at least one relative with ADHD, with one-third of fathers with ADHD having children with disorder also. More important, identical twins are often both affected.(National ADD, 97) Treatment is available for people who have ADHD, which includes therapy and drug treatment. But in order to make sure these symptoms are from an actual case of ADHD, and not from an emotional or physical disorder, a medical professional would need to look at the history of the symptoms, ruling out any learning disabilities, or physical problems or environmental factors

westward migration of settlers essays

westward migration of settlers essays Open land, additional benefits and other existing problems encouraged Americans to expand westward. The American people began to realize that the future of the country lay in the development of its own western resources (Nash 533; 1). There were many reasons that made the people face the grueling and dangerous movement west, but the Regardless of the fact that thousands of Indian nations with rich and distinct cultures had populated the land for thousands of years, Americans considered the west to be an empty wilderness. And in less than fifty years, from the 1803 purchase of Louisiana Territory to the California gold rush of 1849, the nation would expand and conquer the West. The great migration began in 1841 and was stimulated by the depression of 1837 with people with some capital hoping to make a fresh start (Nash 534; 2). By 1845, there were 6,000 Americans in Oregon, and the United States government tried to make the 49th parallel as the boundary without success. The fur trade had since declined in this area so the British agreed to the 49th parallel as the boundary in a treaty in 1846 and thus, American sovereignty was established over the area covered by Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The new acquisitions meant that problems like transportation had to be tackled. A canal across Panama was planned but this didnt materialize for many years. The building of a transcontinental railroad with the financial assistance of the government was debated upon. Also the question of slavery in the newly acquired territories was a more troubling issue and this decided the fate of the United States for the next few years. It was because of the sudden shift of labor from farms to towns that started the westward movement up north. The herding of cattle and sheep took place of agriculture (Nash 538; ...

Strategic Human Resource Management Assignment

Strategic Human Resource Management - Assignment Example HRM assumes strategic importance when there is a need for employee commitment to strategic goals concerning efficiency, quality and innovation. A key policy goal underpinning HRM practice is to "maximize organizational integration" (Guest, 1988), where strategic integration refers to "the ability of the organization to integrate HRM issues into its strategic plans" (Guest, 1989). This paper is meant to contribute to the debate by understanding the genesis, concept, approaches and models of SHRM. The paper takes an analytical approach where emphasis is put on the various models of SHRM and its applicability. American firms in the early 1980s had to face stiff competition from foreign companies, who began to export their products to the USA at lower prices than American companies could offer. The cost advantage stemmed from lower labour costs and made it nearly impossible for American companies to survive. They had to look for more efficient and effective ways to use the resources available to them and stay afloat. The ensuing effort gave rise to the concept of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM). ... It covers macro-organizational concerns relating to structure and culture, organizational effectiveness and performance, matching resources to future business requirements, and the management of change (Hales, 1994). According to Miller (1989), "SHRM encompasses those decisions and actions which concern the management of employees at all levels in the business and which redirect towards creating and sustaining competitive advantage." Wright and Snell (1991) have suggested that in a business, SHRM deals with "those HR activities used to support the firm's competitive strategy." Another way of looking at SHRM is "the pattern of HR deployments and activities intended to enable an organization to achieve its goals" (Wright and McMahan, 1992). Truss and Gratton (1994) define SHRM as "the linking of HRM with strategic goals and objectives in order to improve business performance and develop organizational cultures that foster innovation and flexibility." Ghoshal and Bartlett (1997) see SHRM as a radical new approach to organization, management and employee relations and indeed to the relationship between firms and their host societies and to each other. They advocate a strategy towards HR in which employees are developed and made employable and this keeps the employer honest. Differences between Business Strategy and SHRM Business strategy is commonly understood as the long term planning by a firm to link its external environment with the internal capabilities so that a unique position can be attained in the market and firm's value can be improved. Business strategies can be formulated in line with any of the internal factors of an organisation that best utilises its external opportunities. Unlike conventional

LEED and Lean Fundamentals Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

LEED and Lean Fundamentals - Term Paper Example However, generation of waste come from the individual processes that are within the production (Wiedmann & Minx, 2008). Due to this reason focused waste management demands that engineers should know the type and the source of waste. As it stands, this remains unknown with any accuracy. The work's purpose is to offer a solution through the development of a method that would involve the integration of waste from the environment into the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) lean method. Specifically it involves integration of the corporate standards of environment with the VSM process, thus permitting the established lean process to focus at specific improvement actions for environment. This method’s application is demonstrated in a set up that represents manufacturing, representing a variety of impacts in the environment. The deployment can be generalized to any environmental factor. It can represent a customized index of waste for a specific industry. The focus industry came up with the many ways that explored the multidimensional environmental wastes. The staff can use the resulting method in to quantify the wastes that are generated from the individual processes and thus can report cases of the wastes production which would enable the establishment of the waste management process for the whole lean process (Hagood & Grunden, 2012). Through this attempt, then the waste management in the manufacturing industries would be perfected. The idea can later be applied to other types of industries for the betterment of the environment. Leed and Lean Fundamentals Introduction One of the aims of lean is to reduce waste in the production process. In an attempt to achieve this, one of the common management tools that lean has used is VSM (Wiedmann & Minx, 2008). Value Stream mapping analyzes and also represents the time that is taken for completion of the process while laying emphasis time that does not have value addition to the process hence it is a non-value added time proc ess. This method is very important in reducing the time for the whole processing in a certain industry. As such it reduces the expenses that are associated to the addition time. VSM lays focus on time as wasted consumable. On the other hand, the whole process of lean is concerned with several other types of waste. Consequently the organizations that long to implement lean are required to make use of the different lean tools to cover the various dimensions of wastes for their processes. This means introduction of multiple systems each with its own culture, implementation and the reporting processes. According to Stair & Reynolds (2011), the current innovation in the waste management is targeting at developing an integrated lean system that would avoid this type of duplication. Amongst the areas that better integration is desirable, is between the dimension of time as covered by the VSM and the dimension for the environmental waste. Environmental waste is less represented in the curre nt lean design. This is because the current design of lean tends to perceive waste as a cost of the raw materials or probably the decrements associated to the productivity of the whole production system (Bartholomew & Farrauto, 2011). However, the environmental perceives the type of waste as being important due to the different toxicity and the effects of such on the environment. Collection of the data on the waste from the environment and the waste impacts is an easier task. However it is hard to

Q mthds Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Q mthds - Essay Example (Weiss, 2004) For me, statistics are everywhere around us in this world. We face a lot of situation which involves statistics and more particularly descriptive statistics in our lives. In fact this interaction with statistics is so frequent that it is often very difficult to spend even hours of our lives without having to look at statistics or descriptive statistics. The reason behind statistics being all around us, confines in the daily activities or routine tasks, which we go through. For example, suppose we are watching a match involving our favorite NBA team, Lakers. Before the match we are going to make some inferences. These inferences will be based on the basis of statistics are more importantly descriptive statistics. For example, to say Lakers is going to win will be based on certain variables that both the Lakers and the opposing team possess. For example, our inferences could be based on the fact that on average, Lakers is scoring more baskets than the opposing team. Simil arly it can be on the basis that the players of Lakers such as Bryant and Gosol are taller than the players of opposing team. It could be any reason based on the variable between the two teams. If we define variable, it is used to define certain characteristics that differ from one person to another or from one entity to another. This is how we can use statistics as tool to make inferences in our daily life and gives us a little idea about how important statistics can be. From the above example, it has become really clear that statistics play vital role in our daily lives. The above example might not affect our lives greatly but think about certain situation where using the techniques of descriptive statistics can make our lives better, if we apply the right techniques to a data and make inferences which might benefit us. Let's now take an example of a company which trades stocks in NYSE. Suppose that the market is bullish and shares prices are rising. This increase could be graphed as the following diagram: Source: http://www.nasdaq.com/ Date: 28 September 2009 The above diagram shows the data of NYSE index on a 28 September 2009. From the above data, we can see that the market has reached peak at 1'o'clock. By the use of descriptive statistics and comparing the data of several days, we may come to a conclusion that NYSE reaches its peak each day at 1'o'clock and can disburse all the investment before 1'o'clock to make huge profits. This will create a motivation for the company to invest in the shares by large amount to maximize its profits. However, suppose that the market has a trend that after reaching a certain point it goes down or loses its value. (Orr, 1995) If this trend line or line of best fit, which is a part of descriptive statistics, is known, it will provide this company comprehendible information about not only the timings and compositions of optimum investment in NYSE, but will also tell the company when to divest from the market, before the market indices start to fall. This is how giant brokers operating New York Stock Exc hange make the use of descri

The Ethical And Social Issues Of Systems

The Ethical And Social Issues Of Systems Information system has revolutionized the way information is being transferred and the way information being passed from one person to other. They provide speed, efficiency, dependability, quality, accuracy, reliability for the information and help the organization to achieve the objective of the organization. Ethics is an important aspect in information system. The fact is that business which does ethically will remain for long in the market and ensures steady growth and great acceptance of the products or services from the customers. There are many organizations which are unethical has caused a social outcry and intervention from authorities and didnt prove favorable and created problem for the future of the company. Innovation, efficiency, effectiveness, the ability to utilize market potential optimally, recognize the signs of the times , and the art of saving costs and expenses in the right place at the right time will continue to be of greatest importance alongside all the other corporate virtues. However, an additional element will gain in significance: applied business ethics. It will become more and more a new, solid basis for competitive ability, breaching the limits of classical markets. The more affluent a society is, the more significant non material values become. Corporations that act in a visibly ethical will be preferred by informed consumers more and more. This fact will become a problem for those corporations that ignore moral aspects, and for others it will become a problem for those corporations that ignore moral aspects, and others it will be an opportunity to get the very top GOOD ETHICS ARE GOOD BUSINESS Something which directs the behavior of the company is its ethics. The worst conceivable result of high moral standards would be competitive or other tangible detriment because the special efforts to cost a company attaches to ethical consideration result in net disadvantage for it. The information system is considered as one of the major functional area of business. It is an important contributor to the operational efficiency, employee productivity, morale, customer service and satisfaction. It is a major source of information and it helps in decision making. Information system is a vital ingredient in making our products and services more competitive in the global environment or in the global market. It is a dynamic and more challenging career opportunity and it is a key component of todays networked business. It emphasizes on the quality, strategic business value and security of an organizational information system. It helps to control cost hence helps in cost reduction. It helps in the easy flow of information from one person to other or helps in passing information from the top level managers to the operational level managers When a strategy is adopted to use information technology what people think is how it can be utilized to earn extra income so that they can earn more money Managing Ethics Everybody has the responsibility to be ethical in areas wherever they are and whatever they do. According to Webster dictionary, ethics is defined as the discipline dealing with what are good and bad. Thus ethics is concerned with doing business with truth and justice and other aspects such as fair or healthy competition, meeting the expectations of the society, public relations, social responsibility, consumer autonomy and corporate behavior. When we speak about managing ethics of an organization mainly there are three theories coming to mind. They are: UTILITARIAN THEORY THEORY BASED ON RIGHTS THEORY OF JUSTICE Utilitarian theory suggests that plans and action can be evaluated by their consequences or results. The idea behind this is that plans or actions should have to yield good to large number of people. Theory based on rights tells that people have basic rights an organization should consider and should value the rights of the people and the organizations do not have the right to hinder their rights. Managers have the right to initialize ethics in the organization so that they survive for long. That really means we have to integrate ethical concepts in our daily actions. Ethics can be bring to an organization by establishing an appropriate company policy by using forming an ethics committee and by teaching and by training to the managers to be ethical in their activities. The most important thing is that they have to establish a code of conduct in the organization. FACTORS THAT RAISE ETHICAL STANDARDS The important factors thats raise are the public disclosure and increased concern of a well informed public. These factors together with government regulations and highly educated professional will bring ethics in to the organization. Necessary provisions have been made to enforce ethics in an organization. Privileges and benefits should be withdrawn and have to apply sanctions. Unethical mangers have to be held responsible and should be terminated from the organization. Another important aspect is that we should use code of ethics to solve our problems .The reason is that when a problem arises people try to solve the problem by any means. But if there is a good code of conduct for our organization we need not have to be unethical for solving the problems of the organization. Another important fact is that if people have to be ethical he should have to learn it from the schools and universities. He has to learn to be ethical in every activity or in every code of conduct from the fami ly. He has to understand the importance of ethics and should learn values from their family. Whistle Blowing is a very good way for encouraging ethical behavior in an organization. It means making aware what the unethical practices are. The managers have the responsibility to make necessary changes according to global competition, customer expectations, and the need to respond quickly according to the changes in environment. The main objective is to protect and prevent persons from doing unethical practices. In olden days there where trust, integrity, loyalty, caring and keeping promises were there in an organization and focused on maintaining the culture of the organization with trust, but now a days now people will do anything as there only motive is profit generation. In that case techniques such whistle blowing helps to enforce environmental laws and works for accountability of business. TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS IN ETHICS Technology has got many advantages as well as disadvantages. The managers are operating in a complex environment. Based on the environment the management takes necessary decisions. Thus organizations are concentrated on establishing an environment which is favorable to business and the society. Every organization has some responsibility towards the individuals and the society. So now a days what corporate are focusing to establish social responsiveness relating to corporate operations and policies to the social environment in ways that are beneficial to the company and the society. Ethics thus deals what is good as well as with moral duty and obligations. Technology has helped to simplify the operation, to achieve economies of scale and to establish value for the product manufactured. It has helped to reduce the cost of production hence made the organization to receive huge profits for the products manufactured. In case of increased profits what an organization can do is to work for the development of the society, providing more employment opportunities, providing products which give value to the customers, and preventing from emission of wastages to the nature thereby preventing from environmental problems. ETHICAL ASPECTS OF INFORMATION SYSTEM The spread of information has been revolutionized by new computer technology by the way they gather information, manipulate and communicate data. The use of information system with high speed and efficiency is obtained by the use of local and global networks and software, hardware, people and resources has provided new responsibilities to the people who use information system. It is a source of power. Thus when we speak about the ethics of information system we should say that it has to involve social and political relationships. The most important thing is how information has been used such as whether it has been used for good or bad. A certain code of conduct followed in the organization will explains how information system has been used ethically. It helps to bridge the gap between need of the organization and the rights of every one. A network refers to one system which can share information with other system. It is referred as a reliable source of sharing information .The networ ks participants have recognized the value of information system and has combined humanity. ORGANISATIONAL ISSUES IN INFORMATION SYSTEM The organizations and corporate were rocked by the accounting scandals at Enron, Tyco and WorldCom.
